Why Sheep?
In addition to traditional landscape services, EarthScapes can also provide a unique way for you to eliminate noxious weeds, clear brush and reduce fire risk on your property in an environmentally friendly way. How do we do this? Targeted Sheep Grazing!
Good grazing practices are not just opening gates and putting sheep into your field. Best practices requires knowledge of local grasses and forbes and the utilization of proper technique. EarthScapes can help you manage your weeds and reduce fire risk in this sustainable and cost-efficient way.
Vineyards
The use of sheep grazing in vineyards is an effective method for the management of cover crops, pest plants and weeds. Sheep provide an ecologically sound way to keep your vineyard properly maintained throughout the growing season. John Koene will consult with you or your ranch manager to determine how sheep can be utilized for weed control, and then set up a schedule for rotational grazing of your vineyard.
Fire Risk Reduction
This year’s drought brings with it an increase in tall grasses and fire risk. By using sheep for fuel load management, you can reduce fire risk in a naturally safe and effective manner. In addition to the environmental benefits, you will also increase native plant and animal biodiversity (by eliminating non-native weeds, which sheep prefer). In addition, there are fewer concerns about the quality of water, odors, noise and diseases from fecal matter. This time-tested silvo-pastural system is also very aesthetically pleasing. Imagine looking out into your field and seeing a flock of young sheep eating down the grasses, while at the same time protecting your structures from an increasing fuel load and fire risk.
